In both novels a vulnerable young woman takes up residence in a forbidding country house, but as if stating a preference, Du Maurier appears to take the name of her diabolical housekeeper Mrs Danvers from that of the accountant Danvers who “manages the estate” in Uncle Silas. Yet Bronte’s influence may wend its way through the pen of Sheridan Le Fanu, whose Gothic thriller Uncle Silas (1864) offers an appreciably darker retelling of Jane Eyre and one in which Bronte’s Irish blood comes to the surface. If the second Mrs de Winter seems to be frozen within her predecessor’s shadow, we may fancy that this corresponds with some inevitable admission of inadequacy on Du Maurier’s part at following in Bronte’s footsteps. Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca (1938) is often presumed to be a retelling of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre(1847), and whilst this is not necessarily untrue, it is hardly uncomplicated.

In childhood, Yasodhara is aware of cultural issues and snobberies about the Tamils, but when her father dies and her mother reluctantly rents out the upper floor of their house to a Tamil family, she forms a friendship with a Tamil boy called Shiva. The story is told by two young women, middle-class Yasodhara in Colombo in the south, and Saraswathi, a Tamil in the war-ravaged north. It is that brutal 25-year war which drives this powerful novel towards its devastating conclusion: when it’s all over, what was it for? But since the war began Australia has become home for many more people of Sri Lankan origin, and they came as refugees, fleeing the horrors of war. I listened to these enticing images and added Sri Lanka to my bucket list. They were economic migrants, who spoke nostalgically about the beauty of their home country and its sapphire blue waters. I had Sri Lankan friends before the civil war in Sri Lanka, which began in 1983. I think that this was because like many a first novel Island of a Thousand Mirrors deals with an issue that weighs heavy on its author’s heart, and that issue is the futility of war. It won the Commonwealth Regional Prize for Asia, was short-listed for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature and was long-listed for the Man Asia Prize and the Dublin IMPAC Award. Island of a Thousand Mirrors has achieved remarkable success for a debut novel. In the vein of Wicked, The Woodcutter, and Boy, Snow, Bird, a luminous reimagining of a classic tale, told from the perspective of Agnes, Cinderella’s “evil” stepmother. Publisher: William Morrow (May 22, 2018).HarperCollins | Amazon | Barnes & Noble About All the Ever Afters However, I would highly recommend it to any fan of Cinderella. Two characters we always thought to be cruel to Cinderella, were just narrow-minded.Īll the Ever Afters is fantasy, and it isn’t as light-hearted as you may expect it to be. The same is true for Agnes’s daughters, also known as the ugly stepsisters. Agnes’s life was incredibly hard, but she managed to come out on top thanks to her quick wits. I loved the way the author was able to turn someone who we grew up despising, I found myself sympathetic towards her story. This retelling takes a lot of the magic out of the story, but I still found it enjoyable. From her childhood to motherhood, we see the how good and evil from one story may not be true in another. Here, we are given a new spin on the story of Cinderella and her wicked stepmother. This book tells the story of Cinderella’s step-mother (Agnes). Once I accepted the new perspective of a story I know by heart, I really enjoyed All the Ever Afters. I had to remind myself many times that this isn’t another story about a princess. This one took me a bit to get into because while I was reading the first few chapters, I kept thinking it was Cinderella’s voice.
